Reverend Henry Kane's (Nathan Davis) head from director Gary Sherman's 'Poltergeist 3' (MGM, 1988).
This special effects piece is constructed from plastic, metal, and rubber components. The head is cable controlled (currently non-functional) and has a removable eye mechanism (in-out, up-down, left-right) and sprung jaw mechanism for opening and closing the mouth. The piece was designed to be subjected to intense heat without melting or damaging the constituent parts.
Analysis of the provided screen captures and all other available evidence points to the head being a screen match to the prop head in the movie.
Created by Anthony Fredrickson, Doug Drexler, and Academy Award winning artist Dick Smith, this articulated Kane puppet head was designed to mummify as an in-camera effect. The on-camera mummification was accomplished by placing an extremely thin wax shell over a Dick Smith sculpted head. When subjected to intense heat, the shell dissipates to reveal Kane's mummified head. During the melting scene the eyes and mouth can be seen to move.
The ending of Poltergeist 3 was re-shot in March of 1988, with this head having to be created in 12 days (Gorezone, 9/88). Director Gary Sherman explained the evolution of the storyline in the July 1988 issue of Cinefantastique magazine (Vol. 18, No. 5, pp. 39).
“I became so fascinated with Tangina’s dehydrated remains that we also did one for Bruce and Donna for the scene where Pat comes into the ice storm at the end. She’s being chased through the storm by Kane, falls and finds Bruce’s and Donna’s remains. Then I decided to change the ending. Tangina actually accomplished Kane’s death so I thought we should see Kane transformed into one of those dehydrated remains. It all became much more complicated than what we were initially going to do, but Dick, John, and Doug came up with something incredible.”
That “something” ultimately ended up being the sequence now in the film when Patricia (Nancy Allen) slices off Kane’s head with a shovel, and then the head decomposes on the floor. Using practical effects, we see cuts between Patricia’s terrified expression and the flesh melting right off of Kane’s face, revealing the rotted skull beneath it. This new sequence, filmed with this prop special effect head months after the picture wrapped, replaced the original 'lines of light' demise effect created by Dick Smith.
Condition: There are some tears to the skin, some light damage to the teeth, and the eye controls are currently not working. The piece has not had any restoration and is completely original to the production. The bottom lip is detached from the jaw, once held in place with a light restoration the mouth area will match perfectly with its screen captures.
Dimensions: 9" x 12" x 6"
